What examiners see students get wrong here
These are the errors that cost marks on sustainable production, taken from our own topic notes. Read them before you practise and you will recognise the traps in the questions.
- Writing about pollution, environmental law or ethics instead of the production process. Those are separate subtopics with their own marks.
- Saying a change is good for the environment and stopping. The mark comes from what happens to the business next: its costs, its sales or its reputation.
- Claiming sustainable production always lowers costs. Most methods raise them first, and some raise them permanently.
- Claiming it always raises costs, which ignores waste reduction and lower energy bills.
- Confusing reuse with recycling. Reusing means using the same item again as it is. Recycling means breaking it down and making something new from the material.
- Assuming every customer will pay more. Some will, and some will go to the cheaper competitor.
- Listing six methods quickly instead of taking two of them properly through to a consequence.
- Concluding that a business "should be sustainable because it is the right thing to do", which answers a different question from the one asked.
