This explains what the Excel in Economics portal stores about you and why. It describes what the software actually does, so if you find something here that does not match what you see, that is a bug and we want to know about it.
The short version. You can use the whole portal without an account, and if you do, your work stays in your own browser and never reaches us. Signing in is what moves your progress onto our servers so it follows you between devices. We do not sell anything about you to anyone.
If you do not sign in
Your board, level, practice history, accuracy by topic, mistakes locker and drafts are stored in your browser’s local storage on that device. They are not sent to us. Clearing your browser data deletes them permanently, and we cannot recover them for you because we never had them.
If you sign in
Signing in uses Google, through a service called Supabase that manages accounts for us. We receive your name and email address from Google, but not your password, which we never see.
Once signed in, we store on our servers:
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Your name, email and chosen exam board | So the portal shows the right syllabus and your work follows you between devices. |
| Which questions you answered and whether you were right | To show you your weakest topics and suggest what to practise next. |
| Essays you submit, and any marks and feedback on them | So you can be given feedback, and so a tutor can review the marking. |
| Problems you report on a question | So we can fix the question. |
Essay marking
When you submit an essay for marking, the text of that essay is sent to Google’s Gemini service, which produces the marks and written feedback against the published band descriptors. Do not put personal information about yourself or anyone else into an essay you submit. Write about economics only.
If you would rather your work were not sent to an outside service, do not use the essay marking. Everything else in the portal works without it.
Measurement
We use Google Analytics and Vercel Analytics to understand how the portal is used: how many people open it, which sections they reach, whether they finish a practice set. These record events such as “a practice set was started”. They deliberately do not receive your name, your email, the questions you saw or the answers you gave.
Who else is involved
| Service | What it does for us |
|---|---|
| Vercel | Runs the website and provides visitor analytics. |
| Supabase | Manages accounts and stores signed-in students’ work. |
| Sign-in, fonts, analytics, and the essay marking described above. | |
| jsDelivr | Delivers two small open-source scripts the portal uses. |
How long we keep it
Work stored in your browser lasts until you clear it. Work on our servers is kept while your account exists. Ask us to delete your account and we will remove your profile, your practice records and your essays.
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Write to us at the address on the contact page and we will respond within 30 days. If you are unhappy with how we handle it, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
If you are under 18
This portal is built for students sitting school-level Economics exams, so many of the people using it are under 18. You do not need an account to use it, and we would encourage you not to create one without talking to a parent, carer or teacher first. We do not show advertising and we do not sell data.
