What examiners see students get wrong here
These are the errors that cost marks on organisation and management, taken from our own topic notes. Read them before you practise and you will recognise the traps in the questions.
- Counting everybody below a manager as their span of control. It is only those directly responsible to them.
- Saying a flat structure has a long chain of command. Fewer levels means a shorter chain.
- Writing that a tall structure is always worse. Close supervision and promotion chances are real advantages.
- Saying delegation passes responsibility to the subordinate. Authority is passed; the manager keeps responsibility.
- Describing an autocratic leader as simply unpleasant, instead of explaining when speed and control are what the situation needs.
- Recommending democratic leadership every time without any reference to the workforce in the case.
- Confusing redundancy with dismissal for poor work. Redundancy means the job has gone.
- Choosing who to make redundant on length of service or on sympathy rather than on the skills the business will still need.
