What examiners see students get wrong here
These are the errors that cost marks on urban land use zones and the cbd, taken from our own topic notes. Read them before you practise and you will recognise the traps in the questions.
- Describing without explaining on the 7 mark CBD question. Cambridge's own note: high order services is Level 1, cinema is Level 1, but high rise buildings because the cost of land is expensive is Level 2. Every characteristic needs its because.
- Giving no named example. The mark scheme caps you at 5 out of 7 by rule.
- Naming a country. A country is not a named urban area. Cambridge treats it as no example at all.
- Naming a city but no detail inside it. Level 3 needs named streets, named services, named districts or figures.
- Writing a non comparative comparison. "Must be comparative" is printed in the mark schemes. Use the word than.
- Giving direct opposites as two sides of a conflict. "Some like the jobs, others dislike the jobs" is one mark.
- Assuming the CBD is the best or the busiest. Gaborone's CBD scored worse on environmental quality than the suburbs, and Hong Kong's traffic did not peak at the CBD. Read the data.
- Answering with the whole city when the question names a zone. If it says rural-urban fringe, every point must be about the fringe.
